BJARGRÚNIR - Recent reviews <3

We have been receiving heartwarming reviews for our new album BJARGRÚNIR - in many different languages! Here is an excerpt from some (in their respectful original languages);

Majstersztyk. Pradawna magia.”

  • Morgunblaðið (Arnar Eggert Thoroddsen): “Hljóðheimurinn hér kallar sannarlega fram eitthvað „íslenskt“ og já, harðræðið og myrkrið rúllar þarna um rásirnar….Lög eins og „Stóðum tvö í túni“ og „Grafskript“ sem maður þekkir í gegnum Þursa eru útsett með Umbruhætti og er það vel. Annað líður fagurlega um eyru og maður finnur vel fyrir þeirri ástríðu og þeim hjartatóni sem þessi magnaða sveit klæðir verk sín einatt í.”

  • Roots Music Report (Joe Ross): “With meticulous attention to detail and high-quality audio recording, the women of Umbra could be considered Icelandic song-carriers as they sweetly sing wistful remembrances of bygone days in songs such as “Amid the Town We Twain Stood” (Stóðum tvö í túni), “The Mirror of Friendship” (Vinaspegill), “In the Firths” (Fagurt er í fjörðum) and “The Moon Quatrains” (Mánavísur)….Carefully cultivated, enchanting music lends immediacy and accessibility to the story songs. Delicate and passive reflections on life in beautiful melancholic moments retain emotional depth without ever sounding anachronistic.”

  • KulturPort.

NoMeMus 2022

We just came back from lovely Söderköping where we performed at the NoMeMus medieval music festival, which took place during the Söderköping Gästabud. We had an absolutely lovely time performing at the beautiful Laurentii kyrka and enjoyed the festivities and delicacies in the town square and church square. Hope to be back some day!

Skálholt Summer Concert Festival

Always a pleasure to perform at Skálholt, a countryside haven for musicians for some decades now. We thoroughly enjoyed performing some lovely tunes from Icelandic early manuscripts (Hymnodia and Melodia) and revisiting “good friends” from the Red book of Montserrat.

Umbra at Folkelarm 2022

We are so happy to announce that Umbra has been chosen to showcase at the Folkelarm festival in Oslo in November! We will be performing at the Riksscenet on Friday Nov 25th and will be joined by some beautiful other nordic artists during the festival. Take a look at Folkelarm.no for more!

BJARGRÚNIR - Icelandic folk songs and ballads - out now!

Our new album, BJARGRÚNIR, is out now! We are extremely proud of the outcome, the result of 3 years’ (or more in fact) worth of research, trying out different kinds of arrangements during performances, going back and forth with every detail and putting all of our hearts into the project. The album contains in total 16 tracks; folk songs and ballads - including both original compositions and arrangements of old tunes from old written transcriptions or tape recordings. The oldest text on the album is from the 13th century. On six of the tracks our good friends Matthías Hemstock and Eggert Pálsson played percussion. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by tonmeister Ragnheiður Jónsdóttir and is released via labels Dimma and Nordic Notes (CD) and distributed on streaming platforms via Sony Music Iceland.
